History

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has a history dating back to 3rd century BCE, when it was founded by Emperor Ashoka and became a center for Buddhism. It flourished under the Kushan and Karkota dynasties, witnessing the construction of grand temples and Buddhist stupas. In the 14th century, Islamic rule began with Shams-ud-Din Shah Mir, leading to the city's transformation into a cultural and religious hub. The Mughals (16th–18th century) enhanced its beauty with gardens and mosques, followed by Afghan and Sikh rule. In 1846, the Dogra dynasty took control under British influence, and after India's independence in 1947, Srinagar became a focal point of the Kashmir conflict. Today, it remains a historically rich and politically significant city known for its breathtaking landscapes, lakes, and cultural heritage.
