Budgam
Overview
Tosa Maidan is a stunning meadow located in the Khag tehsil of Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir, nestled within the serene Himalayan range. Known for its natural beauty and historical significance, Tosa Maidan is a vast pasture spanning 3 miles in length and 1.5 miles in width, surrounded by towering deodar trees. It has long been a grazing ground for shepherds, including those from neighboring regions, and was once an important route for the Mughals traveling to Poonch. This peaceful destination offers visitors a picturesque landscape of lush greenery in summer, dotted with camps of the Gujjar community and flocks of grazing sheep.

Spring (March to May)
The temperature ranges from 5°C to 18°C. This season is mild and pleasant, with blooming wildflowers and fresh greenery, making it an ideal time for trekking and photography. .
Summer (June to September)
Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C, offering cool and comfortable weather perfect for outdoor activities. The meadows are lush and vibrant, with wildflowers and grazing sheep, making it the best time to visit. .
Autumn (October to November)
With temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C, the weather becomes cooler and crisper. The foliage turns golden, creating a beautiful landscape, but visitors will need warm clothing, especially in the evenings.
Winter (December to February)
The temperature drops to -5°C to 5°C, with heavy snowfall creating a winter wonderland. While stunning, the cold and snowy conditions can make access challenging, and it's a quieter season to visit.

By Air
The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (Srinagar), about 54 kilometers away. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach Khag, a town in Budgam district and then continue your journey to Tosa Maidan. .
By Train
The closest railway station is in Budgam, which is well-connected to major cities in India.
By Road
From Srinagar, you can take a taxi or drive via Khag town to reach Tosa Maidan. The route is scenic, with beautiful views of the surrounding hills and forests.
Best time to Visit
April to September
The best time to visit Tosa Maidan is during the summer months, from April to September, when the weather is pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant. During this time, the meadow is covered with wildflowers, and the green pastures provide a picturesque backdrop for visitors. The region also experiences moderate weather, making it ideal for trekking, sightseeing, and photography.
Tosa Maidan has a rich historical legacy, dating back to ancient times. It was a crucial grazing ground for shepherds from surrounding areas, and the Mughals historically used this route to reach Poonch. The Mughals even built a seven-storeyed structure called Dam-Dam in the area. Tosa Maidan's strategic location has made it a point of interest throughout history. In 1964, the meadow was leased to the Indian Army for artillery training, a lease that lasted until 2014. Following local opposition, the lease was not renewed, and the meadow was officially opened to the public in May 2016, inviting tourists to experience its natural beauty once again. Tosa Maidan now stands as a serene escape for nature lovers, trekkers, and history enthusiasts, offering both scenic beauty and a glimpse into the past.
