Overview
Sonmarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold," is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Known for its stunning landscapes, snow-covered mountains, glaciers, and the Sindh River. Sonmarg is a major hub for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. It is situated at an altitude of 2,730 metres and serves as a base camp for several treks.

How to Reach
By Road
From Srinagar About 80 kilometres (2-3 hours) away, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus. From Leh Approximately 400 kilometres, taking around 10-12 hours. .
By Air
Nearest Airport Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, followed by a taxi or bus ride to Sonmarg.
By Train
Nearest Railway Station Jammu Tawi, about 270 kilometres away, with taxi or bus options to Sonmarg via Srinagar.
Best time to Visit
(April to June)
The ideal time to visit Sonmarg is during the summer months (April to June), when the snow melts, revealing the lush green meadows and providing excellent conditions for trekking, camping, and sightseeing. Winters (November to February) are best for snow sports, but heavy snowfall often makes the area inaccessible.
Sonmarg's historical significance lies in its position as a gateway to Leh and Ladakh, as well as its role in the Silk Route trade centuries ago. The town has long been a staging ground for pilgrims heading to Amarnath Temple, one of the holiest sites for Hindus. Additionally, Sonmarg has served as an important stop for traders and travellers crossing the Zoji La Pass, a vital mountain pass connecting Kashmir with Ladakh. Sonamarg has played an important role in ancient trade and economics . In terms of political history , King Pravarasena II,who governed Sonamarg 2000 years ago , is the earliest known ruler . Following him , the monarchs who ruled it alternated between Mauryas , Kushans , Huns , Chaks , Mughals and Sikhs becoming a critical part of Sonamarg,s past.
