History

Shrunz Waterfall is a naturally formed waterfall, created by the flow of the Ningli Nallah stream, which originates from Affarwat Mountain and Alpather Lake in Gulmarg. Historically, the water from Ningli Nallah has been vital for agriculture and drinking purposes for many nearby villages and towns like Sopore and Sonawari. For a long time, Shrunz Waterfall remained unknown to tourists and was mostly visited by local villagers for relaxation and small gatherings. In recent years, the Jammu and Kashmir government started promoting Shrunz Waterfall as part of an eco-tourism project to boost local tourism, especially after 2022–23. The area around Shrunz is connected with traditional Kashmiri village life, but no specific myths, ancient legends, or historical battles are directly linked to this waterfall.
