Ganderbal
Overview
Krishansar Lake is an alpine oligotrophic lake located near Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India, at an elevation of 3,710 metres (12,170 feet). Situated less than a kilometre northwest of Vishansar Lake, it measures 0.95 km in length and 0.6 km in width. Named after Krishna, the lake is home to various fish species, including brown trout. It freezes in winter, making it inaccessible during heavy snowfall. The surrounding lush meadows attract local shepherds in summer. The lake, primarily fed by melting snow and glaciers, drains into Vishansar Lake, contributing to the Kishanganga River. It is also a popular trekking destination north of the Kashmir Valley.

Autumn brings cooler temperatures, ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). The area experiences beautiful fall colours as the vegetation changes. Early autumn is still suitable for trekking, but by late November, the weather can become quite chilly.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is harsh at Krishansar Lake, with temperatures often dropping below 0°C (32°F). The lake typically freezes over, and heavy snowfall can make the area inaccessible. Winter sports may be possible for the adventurous, but access is limited
How to Reach
By Air
The closest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) in Srinagar, about 80 kilometres from Sonamarg. Taxis are available from the airport. .
By Car
The distance from Srinagar to Sonamarg is approximately 80 kilometres, taking around 2-3 hours. Check weather conditions as they may affect travel.
By Train
The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, roughly 270 kilometres from Sonamarg. From Jammu, take a taxi or bus to Srinagar, then continue to Sonamarg. Trek to Krishansar Lake Trek from Sonamarg The trek to Krishansar Lake is about 7-8 kilometres (4-5 miles) and takes approximately 3-5 hours.
