The nearest railway station is in Baramula, about 32 km away. From Baramula, you can travel by bus or taxi to Gulmarg.

By Road

Gulmarg is well connected by road to Srinagar and other major towns in Kashmir. The drive from Srinagar takes about 1-2 hours via the scenic Srinagar-Gulmarg Highway.

Gulmarg’s history dates back to ancient times. The name "Gulmarg" is derived from Persian, meaning "Meadow of Flowers." It has been known for its beauty for centuries. The region gained prominence during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who visited the area and appreciated its beauty. Gulmarg was also a favorite retreat of the British during the colonial period, who developed the area into a hill station and resort. In the 19th century, British officials and aristocrats made Gulmarg a popular summer destination, and it was during this time that the famous Gulmarg Golf Course (one of the highest in the world) was established. It is also believed that the first modern skiing expedition in India was initiated here in the 1920s. Over the years, Gulmarg has grown as a leading winter sports destination in India, attracting tourists from around the world.
