Gulmarg was also a favorite retreat of the British during the colonial period, who developed the area into a hill station and resort. In the 19th century, British officials and aristocrats made Gulmarg a popular summer destination, and it was during this time that the famous Gulmarg Golf Course (one of the highest in the world) was established. It is also believed that the first modern skiing expedition in India was initiated here in the 1920s. Over the years, Gulmarg has grown as a leading winter sports destination in India, attracting tourists from around the world.
