Overview

Bangus Valley, also spelled as Bungus, is a hidden gem in Kashmir with great potential for tourism. Located in the northern part of the Kupwara district, it lies at an altitude of about 10,000 feet above sea level. The main valley, known as Bodh Bangus (Big Bangus), covers around 300 square kilometers and has an oval shape, stretching from east to west. It is bordered by the Rajwar and Mawar mountains in the east, Shamasbury and Dajlungun mountains in the west, and Chowkibal and Karnah Guli in the north. A smaller valley, Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus), is to the northeast. Both valleys are lush green meadows surrounded by dense forests and a flowing stream.

How to Reach

By Air

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, about 109 km from BANGUS Valley. You can take a flight to Srinagar from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Jammu. .

By Train

The nearest railway station is in Baramula (about 54 km away). From there, you can take a taxi or bus to Bangus, and continue your journey by road to BANGUS Valley.

By Road

From Srinagar, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Kupwara, which is around 92 km away. From Kupwara, it’s about 47 km drive to the BANGUS Valley. The roads can be challenging, especially in winter, so it's advisable to go with a local guide or a 4x4 vehicle.

Best time to Visit

The best time to visit BANGUS Valley is during summer (May to September) when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor activities. Spring (March to April) is also a good option, with the valley blooming and temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Avoid winter (December to February) due to freezing temperatures and heavy snow.
